At the Onsen - De Galerie Den Haag

OPENING | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

De Galerie Den Haag are delighted to announce that, starting Saturday, September 27, they will be presenting Soo Burnell's latest series, AT THE ONSEN. This collection celebrates the rich traditions of public bathing within Japanese culture.

From the serene, historic hot springs high in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture to the hidden traditional streets of modern Tokyo, this collection explores the rituals of the onsen (a hot spring bath using mineral-rich water from deep within the earth) and the sento (a public bathhouse in urban areas that also serves as a community gathering place).

This journey is not just about the places, but also about the people: the meals shared, the stories told, and the warmth and hospitality experienced along the way.

The serenity and architectural contrasts within these spaces evoke the silence and deep sense of tranquility found in these places—where people come to bathe, rest, connect with others, and reconnect with their own inner stillness.

Meet Soo at the opening and learn more about this series!

AT THE ONSEN, A JOURNEY TO STILLNESS

At the Onsen, A journey to stillness

The heat is the first thing you feel, the intense warmth enveloping you, drawing you in. The sound of the water, easing your senses. It’s as if you’ve left the weight of life outside, beyond the door, as you breathe into the quietness, sinking into the water, the heat seeping through your skin.

At the onsen is the new collection of artworks by Scottish fine art photographer Soo Burnell. Following on from her highly acclaimed poolside collections that feature historic and contemporary swimming pools across the UK and Europe, Soo’s new series takes the viewer on a journey to Japan.
